Below we focus on set-off, ink scuffing and ink repulsion, and we show practical ways to keep the print stable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-0c0138dd793dc850dbd35c109ec80dcd\" style=\"margin-bottom:33px\">1. Set-off \u2013 when fresh ink transfers to the next sheets<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-4a0940533698b8b997d79930b14104e8\" style=\"margin-bottom:33px\">Set-off appears when fresh ink transfers from lower sheets to upper ones in the pile. As a result, unwanted marks or shadows show up on solids and images. Additionally, you can add an ink additive, use powder spray on the pile and adjust the way sheets are delivered.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Delivery pile too high<\/strong> \u2013 When the pile becomes heavy, air escapes and pressure increases. Therefore it is better to work with lower piles, use more frequent pile changes and combine this with careful powder application.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Wrong delivery settings<\/strong> \u2013 On heavy boards, poor adjustment of fall height and gripper opening often leads to set-off. In this case reduce the fall height, adjust the timing of the grippers and ensure that sheets fall tightly into the delivery without excessive bouncing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Poor flatness of the substrate<\/strong> \u2013 Wavy edges or uneven sheets make set-off more likely. Consequently, choosing a better quality paper with good flatness helps stabilise the result.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Electrostatic charge in the pile<\/strong> \u2013 Static builds up especially on dry or coated stocks. In this case you can print an additional layer of vehicle or use an oil-based overprint varnish to bind pigment to the surface.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Poorly sized, highly absorbent paper<\/strong> \u2013 If the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paper\" title=\"paper\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">paper<\/mark><\/a> absorbs the vehicle too fast, pigment cannot bond properly. Then an oil-based overprint varnish often improves rub resistance. Additionally, you may use a printing paste or a high-gloss oil-based varnish when the job is already printed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Too little binder in the ink<\/strong> \u2013 Sometimes the ink itself contains too little vehicle. Here the solution is simple: add binder to the ink or run an extra pass with vehicle only to strengthen the image.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d94d2e42f1feb5642b850dd9e1c226d6\" style=\"margin-bottom:33px\">3. Usually the reason is excessive drier or too long a pause between printing the first and second colour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul style=\"margin-bottom:33px\" class=\"wp-block-list has-black-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\">\n<li><strong>For short runs<\/strong> \u2013 In short runs you can gently rub the surface with cotton wool. Thus you break the hard skin and help the next ink adhere.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>For long runs<\/strong> \u2013 In longer runs it is better to apply an oil-based overprint varnish and then print the next colour at the moment when the varnish is setting. In addition, you may reduce or remove drier to keep the first layer open for the second one.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-3ce590b212b9562a2cea837f8846f8cc\" style=\"margin-bottom:33px\">When you diagnose the cause correctly, you can choose a matching method and avoid ink repulsion both in small and large runs.
